ABOUT THE ARTIST
Walter Ruttmann (1887-1941), b. Frankfurt, was a pioneer of 'absolute' or abstract animation. His Lichtspiel Opus 1 (1921) is credited as the first public screening of an abstract film. This film influenced the young Oskar Fischinger, who saw one of the first screenings. After his early experiments in abstraction, Ruttmann continued to direct a number of non-abstract films, including Berlin: Symphony of a City, and worked with Lotte Reiniger. He died in Berlin.
